Beyond the Hoop "Bull Dawg" Basketball FAQ

What if I can't afford to pay?

We have scholarships for those players who desire to be apart of program but cannot afford to pay. We can offer partial or full scholarships depending on your situation. Please see your team manager for details. We will not turn a child away because he cannot afford to pay.

How often does the team play?

How often a team will play depends on the season and the coach. Though we participate in leagues and tournaments all year, the spring is the main season and tournaments are generally played every two weeks. Some coaches may wish to add in some other tournaments to prepare their teams for state and national tournaments.

What if my child plays other sports in the spring?

This is a high level basketball program and we play against the best competition in country. This requires commitment to get the players ready to play against this level of competition. Though this is the individual coach's decision each parent must understand that he needs to be able to put a team together with players who are committed to playing against the best and reaching the goal of qualifying for state and national tournaments.

 How do the tournaments work?

There are two organizations at this time we work with in an effort to qualify for state and national tournaments. They are the AAU and YBOA basketball programs. Each team will play in a series of qualifying tournaments to accumulate points and bids to reach the state and/or national tournaments.  (See Parents Manual for more information.)

 Is there travel involved?

There is some travel involved for teams. A team can travel as much or as little as they want. Fortunately, we live in one of the best basketball areas in the country and do not have to travel far to play against good teams. The national tournaments are held all over the country and the state tournament for the YBOA are held in Richmond. It is the coaches, team managers and parents' decision to determine how much or how little they want to travel. Remember the goal for this level of basketball is to reach the state and national tournament.

Do we have to participate in fundraising activities?

Each team has its own goals for tournaments and leagues. Some teams have done really well raising money for their team and reducing their out of pocket cost from parents to almost nothing and they went all the way to the nationals. The fundraising activities are up to each team and require a lot of parent volunteer participation. We do hold one organizational fundraiser each year to raise money for teams and our STAMP program. (See Parents' Manual for more details about the STAMP program.)  This is a great opportunity for each team to earn some money to help reduce costs.

Beyond the Hoop is an academic enrichment, mentoring and basketball training program. Our goal is to increase the chances of the student athletes success on the basketball court and in the classroom.
